Description
In a world where we are taught to put our best face forward, it’s no surprise many hit their breaking point without warning. On the outside, they seem to have it all together, but inside they are dying… literally. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, there is an average of 129 suicides per day. 129 lives lost to mental illness and the pressure to prove; mine was almost one of them.
We do, share, post, tweet, ‘gram, boast, fabricate – impress, meanwhile things are actually falling apart. The pressure to prove ourselves is so great that we slip into the habits of small fabrications, seemingly innocent interactions, and shortcut our way around until we’re lost in the dark. Then, shame does it’s very worst work to keep us there.
To the outside, it’s an unexpected divorce, midlife crisis, or suicide no one ever saw coming. Shocked when the truth comes out, we wonder how we never noticed. How could our friend and loved one be in such a dark place, yet we didn’t even know?
We mourn the loss, but the damage is done. We wish we could have helped prevent it. Maybe we can.
By living a transparent life in the light, free of impressing, not only do we save ourselves, we save each other.
